Since 2010, Jahi has been making his "table drum" for the Bay Area community using simple materials like wood, nails, sharpies and tape. An intergenerational experience, Bring On the Drums invites participants to experience  community through the power of the drum, and through custom design, process and participation, each person experiences unity, creative expression, and cooperation.  Everyone gets to keep they're drum at the end of the session. The "table drum" is a legacy instrument that can be passed down from one generation to another.

If you, or your school or organization would like to schedule a Bring on the Drums session, reach out to us here.

GARVEY DRUMS 2021

Reflections by Jahi

August 17th, 2021. Garvey Drums in honor of the Born Day of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, thanks to a grant by the East Bay Fund For Artists, I was able to make 100 drums and share them in my community. I went out all day giving away drums to Black families all over Oakland. I donated drums to the Boys and Girls Club on High Street in my neighborhood. It felt good to bring joy to my people through the drum and sharing knowledge about Marcus Garvey. I started making these drums in the 90's, and I've been doing them in the Bay since 2010. I learned the technique from a master drummer in Cleveland, Ohio. I use wood, nails, tape, sticks, spray paint and a stencil that said GARVEY. I spray painted the other sides Red, Black and Green, in honor of the flag Marcus Garvey created for Black people all over the world. There's a lot of information on Marcus Garvey, good and bad, but I'd recommend going to Jamaica to his home in St. Ann, and read all of his literary works. And look up Amy Jacques Garvey who gave Marcus his first political education. He's one of my heroes for so many reasons. It was an honor to make drums for my community and put smiles of the faces of the people from the place I call home, Oakland, California. -
